Nimonic 80A UNS N0780

Nimonic 80A UNS N0780 is a nickel-chromium alloy with good oxidation resistance at higher temperatures, with good resistance in carburizing and chloride containing environments.
Availability:

Nimonic 80A is a wrought, age-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy, strengthened by additions of titanium, aluminum, and carbon. It is similar to Nimonic 75 but has improved properties due to the additional elements. This alloy is known for its excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as high tensile strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures.

Chemical Composition

The typical chemical composition of Nimonic 80A includes:
  • Carbon (C): 0.04% - 0.10%
  • Chromium (Cr): 18.0% - 21.0%
  • Silicon (Si): ≤1.0%
  • Manganese (Mn): ≤1.0%
  • Sulfur (S): ≤0.015%
  • Titanium (Ti): 1.8% - 2.7%
  • Aluminum (Al): 1.0% - 1.8%
  • Boron (B): ≤0.008%
  • Nickel (Ni): Balance.

Physical Properties

  • Density: 8.15 - 8.19 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: 1365 - 1405 °C
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 12.7 μm/m°C (20 - 100°C)
  • Modulus of Elasticity: 222 kN/mm²

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength: 1200 - 1800 N/mm² (after age hardening)
  • Yield Strength: 503 - 1500 N/mm² (depending on condition)
  • Elongation: 17% - 39% (depending on condition)

Applications

Nimonic 80A is widely used in industries where high-temperature performance and corrosion resistance are critical. Typical applications include:
  • Gas turbine components
  • Nuclear industry applications (due to its low cobalt content)
  • Exhaust valves in racing engines
  • Fasteners and gearboxes.

Processing and Treatment

Nimonic 80A is usually supplied in the solution-treated condition, which facilitates machining. Subsequent age hardening significantly enhances its mechanical properties. The alloy can be readily formed and welded using conventional methods.

Carbide tools are suggested
for rates better than 50% of Type 304.

Machining Type

Suggested starting rates are:

Single Point turning :

Roughing - 0.15" depth, 0.015"/rev feed -175 SFM
Finishing - 0.025" depth, 0.007"/rev feed - 200 SFM

Drilling :

1/4" Dia hole - 0.004"/rev feed - 60 SFM
1/2" Dia hole - 0.007"/rev feed - 60 SFM
3/4" Dia hole - 0.010"/rev feed - 60 SFM

Reaming :

Feed - same as drilling - 100 SFM

Side and Slot Milling :

Roughing - 0.25" depth - 0.007"/tooth feed - 125SFM
Finishing - 0.050" depth - 0.009"/tooth feed - 140SFM

These rates are for carbide tools,
Type C-2 for roughing, drilling and reaming.
Type C-3 for finishing.
